An innate knowledge of fashion and styling
Not everybody is passionate about fashion nor are they skilled in mixing and matching clothes and accessories. Some people are called fashion adopters while others are called innovators simply because they are able to reinvent their wardrobe by being creative about it. If you are undergoing stylist training, it pays to have a solid understanding of fashion. Some people acquire their taste through looking at magazines or by looking at Hollywood celebrities. Some even study fashion design and these things are all helpful in understanding fashion and prevailing trends. Style however is innate to the person.
An open mind
If you want to educate and help someone about something as personal as choosing clothing and what colours to wears, it is necessary to be open minded. They will have different budgets, purpose for dressing up and dedication for the said activities. Some people are willing to make the change but they have very busy lives. Some people like tom dress up so it is up to you how to clean up their style. Open mindedness is very necessary. Sometimes, you have to be candid if something is not right for your client or if something is good for them but is not the right colour or fit. Talk to them about what colors to wear and styles to adopt.
Client-centric
As much as you have a nice style going on for yourself that does not mean it will work for others. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on what the client really needs to enhance their own looks and not just be copy cats. This makes the work of a stylist very enjoyable and challenging. Each client is different so you will expect some mistakes along the way. Even celebrity stylists make their mistakes but they just move on and make it better the second time around. Be focused on the needs of the clients and they will adore you after the session.
Industry connections
Connections with different salons, boutiques and other relevant industry players can give you and your client’s access to new products, discounts and other amazing perks. Imagine if you can get your clients a dress from a boutique at a lower price. This makes the whole shopping experience with a stylist more fun and exciting. By having good business connections with various boutiques, it is a lot easier to contact them if they have new products to show even before they are released to the market. It pays to be well connected in this industry.
Ready for sleepless nights
Sometimes, there are events and certain projects where the stylist needs to be drinking coffee the whole day just to keep up with demanding schedules. You have to be a quick change artist, understanding what colour suits me or styles to advice another client. There are events when stylists are on the move, round the clock so it is very crucial to be always ahead of the game and to have good connections and sometimes, a dedicated team.
